This project is funded by the European Union (EU) and is implemented by WYG International on behalf of the EU Delegation to Republic of Serbia.
The European Union is a unique economic and political partnership between 27 European countries.
It has delivered half a century of peace, stability, and prosperity, helped raise living standards, launched a single European currency, and is progressively building a single Europe-wide market in which people, goods, services, and capital move among Member States as freely as within one country.
The EU was created in the aftermath of the second world war. The first steps were to foster economic cooperation: countries that trade with one another are economically interdependent and will thus avoid conflict.
Since then, the union has developed into a huge single market with the euro as its common currency. What began as a purely economic union has evolved into an organisation spanning all areas, from development aid to environmental policy.
The EU actively promotes human rights and democracy and has the most ambitious emission reduction targets for fighting climate change in the world. Thanks to the abolition of border controls between EU countries, it is now possible for people to travel freely within most of the EU. It has also become much easier to live and work in another EU country.
The Delegation’s traditional function is to ensure EU representation in Serbia and within this context facilitate the development of relation between the two in the areas of political, economic, trade and external assistance cooperation both financial and technical.
Since December 2009 and under the Lisbon Treaty, the Delegation’s name is Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Serbia. Within this context it has also acquired a leading role with member states embassies particularly in the fields of EU competences, notably trade and external assistance.
With the Opinion, the Delegation together with Brussels headquarters closely monitors Serbia’s preparedness in the field of political and economic criteria in accordance with EU policies in all sectors as well assists readiness for the adoption of the community law (acquis communautaire) in over 30 areas, following the future negotiation chapters.
The European Union and in particular the Delegation continues to assist further progress in all areas of the integration process not only by providing guidance and technical expertise but also with important financial sources. This is needed in order to undertake necessary reforms and harmonization of EU law in the accession process. Following the introduction of the Instrument of Pre-accession Assistance (IPA) in 2007, the Delegation has been put in charge of managing financial assistance programmes which are supporting reforms in Serbia, a task which was implemented by the European Agency for Reconstruction (EAR) with CARDS funds since 2000.
The European Union invests on an average 200 M euro in Serbia annually and has invested since 2000 over 2 billion euro.
Informing the local authorities, institutions, media and citizens about the integration process and about EU institutions and policies is yet another key task of the Delegation.
The Delegation for this purpose apart from its website where extensive information about our activities is widely available, works closely with the media, organizes regular events throughout Serbia and publishes brochures and leaflets. The Delegation remains at the disposal for questions from Serbian citizens concerning the European Union and the integration process.
It is expected that the opening of an information centre in downtown Belgrade will become the first point of contact for citizens and provide information on the Delegation’s activities, the EU and citizen’s rights.
